Goodbye, Posterous

Well, since Posterous announced their shut down, I'd like to announce my last post on this platform.

It's kind of funny that Posterous is shutting down as I graduate from college. I joined the summer after my freshman year. Now that I've graduated, it's kind of symbolic that I move on to a new blog. An era is ending.

You can find me at my website (with my portfolio), My new WordPress Blog, Tumblr, Pintrest, and follow me on Twitter & Instagram.

Applying for jobs is like dating

So I've started the whole job application process. I had very first "big girl job" interview a month ago. I bought a new "professional" shirt from J. Crew and prepped myself on the company I was interviewing with.

A week and a half went by and no response. I was constantly checking my e-mail. Why hasn't she called? I even checked my spam e-mail inbox every day. I was essentially waiting by the phone waiting for a boy to call.

That's when I realized this whole job search thing is like dating. You see companies from afar, but when you find one you really like, you apply. You let them know you are interested. Instead of buying them a drink, you send them a cover letter. If they like you too, you come in for an interview and you get to know each other. You dress up (professionally) because you want to impress them. You wear your lucky watch and do your hair. You may get asked to come back for another interview (date #2), or you may have to wait a while or you may get the job.

I sent a thank you note. The equivalent to "I had a really great time" text. I sent a follow-up e-mail 3 weeks after the interview. In my heart I knew I didn't get it, but I had to make the effort. I had to let them know I was still interested and see if there was still a glimmer of hope. My friends & co-workers were trying to be supportive & telling me: Maybe something came up. Maybe they got really busy. Maybe another candidate who was interviewing had to reschedule.

The truth is, they just weren't that into me. And that's ok.

If they are reading this for some reason, I'm not mad. That's just how life goes. This was only my first interview and I would have been really lucky to get a job for the first position I applied for. It was a really good experience and good practice for the other interviews I'm sure I'll have in the future. I need to find a job that's a good fit for me and if they didn't think that, then that must mean there's something better out there. Sure, there was a little bit of disappointment when I got the official e-mail telling me I wasn't the chosen candidate, but I got over it. I wrote 2 cover letters this weekend so we'll see how that pans out. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy my snowday that I have today!

The right meal can do wonders

Last night I had dinner at the amazing Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba with a friend. I hadn't been there in 2 years so I was excited to a) revisit the place b) drink the well-known sangria!

Friday was a stressful day. I was glued to my phone. Texts, phone calls, and e-mails descended upon me. All I could think about was my capstone & other things I had to do. My spin class & shower before dinner put me in a better mood, but when I had my first bite of the baked goat cheese & tomato spread at Cafe, the feel-good endorphins kicked in.

That night, the food kept getting better & better. By the end of the meal I was on cloud 9. The sangria lived up to the hype and I had great conversation with one of my closest friends. It's not just about the food & drink, but who you are with.

Great friend(s) + great food=happiness. That's really all you need in life.

Blogging 2.0

I'm annoyed with Posterous.

I can't iFrame my blog and it won't export to my Tumblr anymore. I think it may be time to move on. I could go back to my blogger, but I feel as if blogger isn't "cool" anymore. Should I give wordpress a shot? I'm thinking about it since I don't have my own wordpress account anymore. Anyone have any feedback?

This quarter has been very code heavy and I love it. I've missed it. It's made me think about applying for front end jobs. Not only am I sprucing up my website but my capstone is one of the biggest websites I've worked on. It's exciting to work on a big project but it is a different experience to work with a team. I'm used to doing all of the work myself. I like having a design team partner though.

As I end this, I think I may move to wordpress after the quarter ends. I won't be blogging for the office, nor will I be going to that silly thing called class :-) Should I ditch blogger & leave that in a thing of the past? Maybe I'll revisit Xanga ;-)

Untitled

Just finished week 6 of the quarter. We're passed the half-way mark.

Tick-Tock.

I am waiting to hear back from my interview if I made it to the final 2. I feel as if I am on American Idol or something, waiting for a call-back. It's not as nerve-racking as I thought it was going to be. I was really focused on my midterm this week so it gave me something else to think about. I also just realized this is the first time that I don't really know what's ahead of me. I knew I was coming to DePaul December of my senior year. I've always had everything planned out: what classes I'm taking, what jobs I'm working, etc. When I look ahead in the calendar, all I see is a dark abyss of unknown. Maybe that will do me some good. I'm not saying it is a bad thing, I just have never experienced that feeling of not know what is next. It is kind of exciting. A little scary, but I'm not going to worry about it yet.

I also got an "almost alumni" fair e-mail the other day. Things are getting real now.
